Senator Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo Chairman of the 10th Senate Committee on Health Lauds Family Planning Efforts at the FP2030 Accountability Framework.
“I express my profound pride in the continuous efforts and significant contributions made by stakeholders in enhancing family planning services across Nigeria. My heartfelt appreciation for your efforts over the years and your continued dedication. I am extremely proud of the exceptional work you are doing for our women and children.”
Highlighting the critical challenges faced by the nation, Senator Banigo emphasized the alarming maternal, infant, and postnatal mortality rates in Nigeria. She pointed out that family planning services are essential in mitigating these high mortality rates and stressed the need for integrating these services into a broader healthcare strategy.
“As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary), we are deeply committed to supporting your invaluable work,” she stated. “We recognize that family planning is closely linked to our population dynamics and democratic dividends, which is why the involvement of the National Population Commission is so critical.”
Senator Banigo underscored the importance of connecting family planning services to increased health insurance coverage, ensuring comprehensive healthcare access for all Nigerians. She advocated for a holistic “One Health” approach, where patients entering health centres can access a full range of services, from family planning and maternity care to immunizations and the prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
“Our Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) are the cornerstone of our health services, and we must focus on strengthening these centres to provide holistic care,” she urged. “We must not work in silos; especially given the funding gaps we face in health and other sectors such as education. By working cooperatively and strengthening the primary health sector, we can create greater access to quality health services for our women, children, and youths.”
Additionally, Senator Banigo proposed a town hall meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to discuss shared goals, aspirations, and the gaps that need to be addressed collectively. She acknowledged the invaluable contributions of CSOs and emphasized the need for active involvement from Civil Society Organisations, Partners, Non-Governmental Organizations, Traditional Rulers, and Religious Leaders to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all.
“Thank you for your continued progress and dedication, “I look forward to seeing even greater dividends in health for all our people. God bless you all.”
