At the Delocalised Meeting of the ECOWAS Health Committee in Conakry, Guinea, telemedicine and health technology took centre stage as critical tools in addressing healthcare challenges across the region. Among the attendees was Hon. Senator Dr. Ipalibo Banigo (DSSRS), member of the 6th Legislature of the ECOWAS Health Committee.

The discussions at the ECOWAS delocalised meeting emphasized the growing role of telecommunications and information technology in delivering effective healthcare services. As part of a broader regional strategy, the integration of telemedicine was presented as a means to streamline healthcare delivery, enhance medical education, and improve health outcomes in the West African region.

This topic resonates deeply with Nigeria’s Legislative Health Agenda, as it was also a major focus during the 5th Legislative Health Summit, which Senator Banigo hosted in her capacity as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary). With state assembly legislators, chairmen, members, clerks of health committees present, CSOs and development partners in attendance, the summit highlighted the potential of telemedicine. It provided the first comprehensive platform for discussing health technology in the Nigerian context, particularly as a tool for achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

This convergence of discussions at the ECOWAS meeting and the Nigerian Legislative Health Summit marks a strategic alignment in health policy across national and regional levels.
