Reconstruction and Renovation of Degema National High School
Senator Dr. Ipalibo Harry-Banigo has successfully facilitated the renovation and construction of the Principal and Vice Principals’ quarters at Degema National High School, which had been in a state of disrepair for decades. Prior to this renovation, the school faced significant accommodation challenges, forcing Principals and Vice Principals of both the Junior and Senior Secondary schools to commute daily from Port Harcourt, a difficult and expensive endeavour.
The newly reconstructed quarters boast modern, tastefully furnished apartments, including 2 units of three-bedroom flats and 2 units of one-bedroom flats, providing comfortable accommodation for the Principals, Vice Principals, and their families.
Notably, the project employed both skilled and unskilled workers from within Degema Community and its environment, including a project manager, quantity surveyor, carpenters, tilers, masons, painters, welders, and borehole specialists. Some of these workers were beneficiaries of Senator Harry-Banigo’s skill acquisition training program during her tenure as Deputy Governor. One such beneficiary, trained in paint production, secured the contract for painting the entire building.
This project has not only addressed the school’s pressing accommodation needs but has also contributed significantly to job creation and the economic well-being of the host community.
