As a member of the 6th Parliament and the ECOWAS Health Committee, I strongly believe that promoting technology for health is crucial for our development. In this interview, I emphasized the importance of leveraging technology to improve healthcare outcomes, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
We have already made strides in this direction, having discussed information technology for health education at the 2024 Legislative Health Summit. Our plan is to upscale this conversation in subsequent summits, ensuring that we can reach local government levels, rural communities, and hard-to-reach areas with vital health education information.
A simple yet effective approach is to develop mobile apps that can be accessed on basic mobile phones, which are now ubiquitous even in rural areas. This can facilitate health education, disease prevention, and treatment adherence. I recall a successful initiative during my tenure as Deputy Governor, where we collaborated with a telecom company to establish mobile access in a remote riverine community, enabling them to participate in the digital economy.
To achieve this vision, we need to prioritize infrastructure development, particularly right-of-way access for telecom companies. As Chairman of the 10th Senate Committee on Health in Nigeria, I have revolutionized our oversight process, conducting thorough studies and encouraging health institutions to adopt innovative solutions.
By working together with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other stakeholders, I am confident that we can harness technology to improve healthcare outcomes, drive economic growth, and build a better Nigeria for future generations.
