Advancing Healthcare Access and Innovation: Insights from the Senate Committee on Health Oversight Visit – February 2024.

The recent oversight visit conducted by the Senate Committee on Health to several key healthcare institutions has provided valuable insights into the state of healthcare delivery in Nigeria. Led by the distinguished Senator Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, Chairman of the Committee, the visit encompassed a comprehensive review of operations at the National Hospital Abuja, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Federal College of Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM), and the Federal Staff Clinic Gwarinpa.

The primary objective of these oversight visits was to assess the efficiency, effectiveness, and challenges facing these institutions in delivering healthcare services to the Nigerian populace. One of the key areas of focus was the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), where the Committee emphasized the importance of innovative solutions to address the low enrollment rate, which currently stands at 7%. The Committee expressed optimism in seeing NHIA double the enrollment number of citizens through the adoption of innovative approaches and strategies within the next year.

Additionally, the oversight visit to the Federal College of Alternative Medicine (FEDCAM) and the Federal Staff Clinic Gwarinpa shed light on the abysmal state and poor management of these healthcare facilities. Senator Banigo reiterated the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that these institutions uphold the highest standards of service delivery and accountability.

From boosting enrollment rates to ensuring quality care, the oversight efforts of the Senate Committee on Health are focused on advancing healthcare accessibility and innovation nationwide. By identifying areas for improvement and advocating for necessary reforms, the Committee aims to contribute to the enhancement of the healthcare sector for the benefit of all Nigerians.
