As the Chairman of the 10th Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary), I am delighted to share the positive outcomes of our recent oversight visit to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe. During our visit, my colleagues and I inspected various facilities and ongoing projects funded by the 2023 Appropriation Act.

This visit highlighted a pressing issue affecting our health facilities nationwide – the power sector. The challenges posed by inconsistent power supply and the resulting financial burden on our health institutions are significant. This situation exacerbates the plight of patients, many of whom are driven further into poverty due to high out-of-pocket expenses for healthcare, compounded by the astronomical rise in power bills.

As Chairman, I assure you that the 10th Senate Committee is committed to mitigating these challenges. A comprehensive report on the power sector is currently on the floor of the Senate, accompanied by a motion addressing the escalating power costs negatively impacting our secondary and tertiary health services and the health sector as a whole. Our goal is to alleviate this financial strain on our health facilities and ensure that every Nigerian has access to affordable healthcare delivery, ultimately achieving Universal Health Coverage.

SENATOR DR. IPALIBO HARRY BANIGO, SENATOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.
