Excerpts
The Senate
Notes with deep concern the recent fire outbreak and oil spill from Manifold Well 8/ BUG 008 in OML 18, Bukuma (Agum) Community, Rivers State, which caused extensive environmental damage, displacement of residents, destruction of property, and health risks to the affected population.
Recalls that incidents of oil spills and fire outbreaks in the Niger Delta region are recurrent and often result from lapses in safety protocols, sabotage, or inadequate enforcement of environmental laws.
Recognizes the severe consequences of this incident, including contamination of rivers, farmlands, and aquatic life, which constitute the primary sources of livelihood for the residents of Buguma ASALGA, Ifoko, ASALGA, and Bukuma (Agum) Community in Degema.
Aware that the pollutants released pose significant health risks, including respiratory and waterborne diseases, and long-term effects such as cancer and organ damage, thereby escalating the public health crisis in the region.
Concerned by the delayed response of responsible oil companies and regulatory bodies, which exacerbates the suffering of affected communities and undermines public trust in the enforcement of environmental laws.
SENATOR DR. IPALIBO HARRY BANIGO, SENATOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
